I know sometimes i neglect updating the blog with digital only downloads from bandcamp, and i apologize for that... but if you didn't hear about it yet, i will inform you now. While digging through my boxed up remnants of my old apartment, i found quite a few random tapes. I've been listening to these tapes to see if they are recyclable or not, and i have found quite a few with some of my recorded output on them. An older habit of mine, for when i recorded, was that i would route my mixer to a cassette player, before my usb recording hub. I very much liked the sound i got by doing that, well some time before i found out i could just leave it on pause, i'd just go ahead and burn through a tape. This tape marked Amy Grant "Lead Me On" is the source for this experiment.

I took the tape and played it back slowed down, and recorded the sound presented(that is pass one). I then took that audio recorded it to tape, and again played it back slowed down and recorded that. From there every couple of weeks i'll upload another pass...

Civilization, any civilization, is doomed because of the goldfish/castle phenomenon. a couple of years ago a label that shall remain nameless, had an idea for a series of tapes where the artist uses/destroys another artists work. most people went to reworking non-noise material, i was of no exception...

for whatever reason, this series never took off (at least my tape wasn't done). i still very much love this track. it's built using danzig III as a source. and i turned it into a ghostly hissy mess. if you know the album well you'll here some real familiar parts and could easily follow along if you played them side by side. it's on bandcamp now, and it's a name your own price download, even $0 will work so enjoy...

NEW HORIZONS:

i always wanted to, even from the beginning, make my own set-up, so it would be a one-of-a-kind thing.
my gear whoring has always stood in the way, i've started the long process of selling off most of my gear.
so i have no choice but to make my own in order to record, a bit of tough love on myself, but i'm sure i can follow through. so one could only expect a bit of a hiatus until i finish my gear purge and begin/complete the making of new equipment.

i have about eight releases out in the aether at this point...
i expect to see four of them materialize at some point, the other four i've given up hope on long ago, for the best i assume, i probably wouldn't like any of that audio now...

Cursed Aether - i think has run it's course, maybe it'll appear again, but there are no other current releases planned for this project, and i might get to uploading the mp3's for this project soon...

DVR - i have one last thing to record for now, then i'll purge that gear and follow suit with a new era of electronics... a few early works will be uploaded shortly

GRIZ+ZLOR: the last official recording (for now) will be the 12 month cassette tape swap hnw edition, there is of course muff obsession II, but again that won't be credited to anyone in particular (the muff is the only thing important), a collaboration with infirmary has been in the works for a while now and is probably the only thing kinda imminent on the release table... some early works, and some wreckage that just never made it will be uploaded asap.

Mystic Soul Alliance - is done, anything i have done under this name will fit under the dvr banner. all this work will be uploaded asap...

REVIEW FROM MUSISQUE MACHINE

'Heavy Masonry ia all about creating a very thick & constant black jittering wall of evil sounding & murky static tone. Inside the black spray paint of black plastic case Griz=zlor offers up just over twenty minutes of grim, nihilistic yet rewarding 'wall' making.

The tracks 'wall' is built around a mid-pace rolling & crunching static boil which has some nice speaker rippling & crackling semi tones come off of it. At times it feels like jitters & crackles could suddenly join-up together & speed-up into all out overload, but they never do. It just keeps a steady, mid-pace & entrenched path through-out which over time becomes very hypnotic & additive as the 'wall's almost stuck groove really digs into your head. The whole track fells like your sliding slowly down a vast black slop of shadowy form& everywhere you look up, down, and from left to right is this juddering static fog that has more pitch blackness in it than white light; and it just seems to be getting thick & more engulfing the longer the track goes on.

Another excellent example of pitch black, thick and unmovable slice of 'wall' making from this Pennsylvanian based one-man project that has been active since 2006.

'Brick By Brick' is an impressively presented, distinctive looking & sonically quality bound collection of Harsh Noise Wall material. The set offers up seven HNW artists who get a 3inch disc or twenty minutes worthy of space each.

The seven discs come in a very neat & classy small plastic box which has black ink on black paper outside cover & inside the box you find a twelve page booklet detailing each track, a near A4 manifesto by Vomit & a 1” badge/ button. Each of the seven discs has it’s own plastic see-through sleeve which is attached to the box by two little plastic ring binders- as I said a very classy, distinctive & thought out package.

On disc four we have a twenty minute untitled track by Griz+zlor & it’s a nice example of this projects often storm bound, thick & murky take on HNW. The track really feelings like your trying to make your way through a high wind tearing, snow heavy storm- it’s very thick, near unchanging yet rather for filling in it’s constant & brutally hypnotic attack.

All told a very nicely presented & thought-out celebration of the steadily growing HNW scene, which works as a wonderful primer for those who have still to taste this extreme but often exhilarating & hypnotic form of Noise, but i'ts also a must have item for anyone who’s already an admitted wall addict. CXXIV: Untitled offers up a frying, crumbling & thick 20 minute track of Harsh Wall Noise by Griz+zlor- the HWN project of Philadelphia based Paul Dever (Failure Of A Great Machine & earth space noise).

CXXIV: Untitled kicks straight in with a very thick wall of sound that is a mixture of frying, hammering rain type noise textures, & just at the back of these textures is this low down drone texture which becomes very hypnotic as the piece goes on really sucking you nicely into whirling maelstrom of HNW. I really like the way Dever keeps the track constant & thick through-out, yet he nicely mangers to shift the tonally qualities between: heavy static down pours, frying in sound fat fast simmers, jack-up ‘n’ rolling hammerings & fast crumbling tones. There's also some really neat sort of stretched spray paint like hissing static textures of noise coming in towards the end of the track

Another great slice of HNW that’s primed for full submersion & blocking out the world around you. With Dever cutting the track to the optimum HNW length of 20 minutes- meaning you have enough time for it to infect & engulf your head yet not enough time to become boring or stayed.

Griz+zlor: Brutal walls of chunky, grinding noise attack you from your speakers at the onset of this track. High pitched pings float over the chaos. The noise moves and shifts as lower throbs make their way to the surface. The amount of variation and time length makes Statue003 a standout track among the sea of strictly noise artists who dominate the scene.

Griz+zlor - Statue003: Wall Noise can get kind of boring if the artist has no purpose or sense of direction. The Griz is definitely one of my favorites because he suffers from neither of these maladies. Using a statue as the source sound, it carves it’s way around the brain folds and inserts enough variety to keep you guessing.

THIS RELEASE WAS ORIGINALLY SLATED TO BE SANDWICHED BETWEEN TWO SHEETS OF SCREEN PRINTED, CORRODED COPPER. AFTER OVER TWO YEARS IN THE ELEMENTS, I CHECKED ON THE COPPER SHEETS ON MY ROOF ONLY TO DISCOVER THEY WERE NO LONGER THERE. I HAD ORIGINALLY DEMOED A FEW OF THESE IN A PLAIN WHITE SLEEVE WITH A COLOR INSIDE. I CAME ACROSS A FEW OF THE SLEEVES READY FOR DISCS. SO, AFTER THE FRUSTRATION OF LOSING THE COPPER SHEETS, AND THE FACT THAT THIS MATERIAL IS OVER TWO YEARS OLD AND SOUNDING DATED. I DECIDE TO RELEASE THIS AS-IS. REVIEW FROM MUSIQUE MACHINE:

'I' is the first release from Cursed Aether; this is a sub project of Griz+zlor's Paul Dever and each release is dedicated to moon worshiping HNW, with all recordings happening during full moons.

First off it's worth mentioning the package for this CDR; the disc comes in a black ink on white paper slight over sized folder which opens up & inside you find a dramatic colour painting of mist shrouded mountain scape; which adds a bit of class to the release. Sonically Dever offers up a twenty two minute track of fast moving & rather hypnotic wall making, the sound I guess is a little cleaner & less dense than Griz+zlor work. The track stays in fairly tight looped electro static form for most of it's run time with Dever occaisionaly adding in sudden longer curls of static tone release, but really this is all about trapid, focused, rewarding and looped 'wall making'

Another very worthwhile & nicely made 'wall' of noise from Mr. Dever with the added extra of some neat & dramatic package. Drop into Cursed Aether Griz+zlor blog here for info & how you can pick up a copy for yourself.

REVIEW FROM PLAGUE HAUS:

Griz+zlor is the project of Philly noisemeister Paul Dever. He’s also the man behind the earthspacenoise podcast and the Earth.Space Noise Research Laboratories label. Among other things, ESN, is responsible for the Kassette Kvlt series where the creators of the works remain anonymous.Nocturnal Beasts is the latest from Griz+zlor. Two nearly hour long tracks of roaring Wall Noise on each side. This particular breed of experimental (non)music is definitely not for everyone. Wall Noise is a pariah among pariahs. To most, it may seem as nothing more than layer upon layer of static and white noise. I’ve found more than a few projects boring myself. A listen of this magnitude takes stamina that I doubted even in myself, but a good set of headphones and an hour and a half of your time will bring you subtle textures you may miss on a casual listen.From sublevel rumbles to radio crackle and fry, this is not background filler for game play or idle conversation. If William Hurt would have piped this into the isolation tank in Altered States, I have a feeling he would have evolved into an inter-dimensional being instead of the rapper he became.Normal cassette box with pro-printed jcard limited to only 75 copies and well worth the $6 price tag.

REVIEW FROM CASSETTE GODS:

The first promo addressed to Cassette Gods with the specific request that it be reviewed by me! How cool is that? I was clearly picked out of the critic roster by Griz+zlor because of my column on the Wall Noise subgenre, which this tape happily belongs to. Unfortunately, even as I wrote that column six months ago, I felt the WN phenomenon slipping out of popularity in the noise world. Culture moves so fast these days that we can feel nostalgic about things that happened last month; nothing sticks around for long before it gets mulched behind Benjamin's angel of history, and snarked at by VH1's "Best Week Ever." WN hasn't quite gone the way of Lil Jon beats and bullet-time FX shots yet, but the outlook isn't good. For this reason, this tape (unfairly) sounds a bit like a relic. "Nocturnal Beasts" is a slow c97 (dude!) whose two sides stay within a mid-heavy frequency range. Even at super loud volumes, the pieces aren't exactly harsh, they're lulling. I would sooner compare them to a bedside noise generator designed to aid sleep than to a nuclear holocaust, or some equally violent metaphor. In this respect, I would say that Griz+lor's WN material has more in common with Richard Ramirez's more subtle projects (Werewolf Jerusalem and recent Man Plug come to mind) whose static drone style is less concerned with brutality than it is with texture and atmosphere. However, Griz+zlor's sound pallet is less sophisticated than Ramirez's, less detailed; close listening reveals a shallow dynamic depth with fewer layers of individual crunch than one would hope to find. Rather than seduce a person to listen further, it encourages him/her into a trance like state; noise to be ignored, or received subconsciously while other mental tasks are performed. In this sense, it is merely a good tape, and unfortunately, considering the current uncoolness of WN, only great tapes will impress. (The excellent B-side of Forbidden Fuck's "Borderline" cassette on Callow God gets a pass simply because it is so detailed and skillfully produced that the listener cannot help but be sucked into its world.) "Nocturnal Beasts" is the type of tape that I will listen to often, but probably while reading a book, not while staring at my speakers, unable to tear myself from the sound.

After reading some additional information about the intention of this tape I have added some further notes: While listening to this tape I did not get any visuals from the title “nocturnal beasts” which actually I think would be fertile ground. I may need to relisten more closely to see if the subtlties of the textures really bear this out.. which would be cool if it does. I certainly would not have gotten that there was moon worship involved but I can see that and in a way I get that staring at the moon with a David Lynchesque growl as accompaniment. I’m not even sure how I got this tape so maybe I missed out on liner notes or whatever text was used to describe it initially.

Paul Dever (Griz+zlor) and Adam Kalmbach (Jute Gyte) collaborate in a massive head-on meteoritic collision of unstoppably brutal noise. The explosion starts right away, there’s absolutely no preamble, it just pounces on you and doesn’t let go for just over twenty minutes. It’s as if the explosives were detonated, then the very next second time was stopped and stretched out interminably so that the resultant infinity of boil and roil could be recorded. Back in the studio the furnace storm was added to and layered with screaming feedback and agonised wailing, the pitch elongated and shoved up the scale in places, and made to sound as if Nature herself was being tortured in an effort to extract her last secrets.

There’s no doubt the two tracks on this 3” CDr (it may as well be a single entity though as one runs up against the other without interruption) are uncompromisingly acidic and caustic – however it’s more than that, because if you listen carefully you will pick up the nuances and subtleties that define this as the work of a two-headed beast. Each artist began by creating a base track which the other then added to and messed with; finally it went back to the original artist for final refinement. Dever employs thick impastos of gritty coarse noise creating a solid sonic canvas; conversely Kalmbach takes a more nuanced approach, picking out the highlights with piercing screech and wail.

After having reviewed Jute Gyte’s ‘Arakan’ recently I wasn’t sure about this: but I have no hesitation in pronouncing this a very successful partnership. Dever and Kalmbach have each played to their individual strengths and produced works which complement and enhance each other. Noise, as chaotic and unstructured as many deem it, follows its own set of rules; understanding the nature of noise and its interactions means that you can work with it, manipulate it and mould it like any artist would his chosen medium. Some are better at it than others. Fortunately both these artists know how to respect and handle their material and have avoided the sin of imposition; instead they have added just enough to bring out the inherent potential in the other’s work without affecting the original material negatively.

It’s a fraught tightrope walk I would think – taking someone else’s work and bringing something of yourself to it while avoiding overwhelming it with your own personal stamp. Dever and Kalmbach have a fine sense of balance apparently, knowing when to push and when to step back to let things take their own course – this augurs well for any future collisions.

With Griz+Zlor (being one Paul Dever), Jute Gyte made a collaborative release of two ten minute tracks of unrelentltness noise. Here it's cut down to ten minutes, but both pieces work rather single minded, so three would have been fine too, The least of this lot. Too much Merzbow on a of-day.
